Overview
Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali-CHUK is becoming the Rwanda’s first large referral hospital. Becoming a digital hospital has put the CHUK at the forefront of healthcare innovation and technology and leads to better care for our patients.
In CHUK, Some processes are streamlined to create paperless automated digital workflows. The aim is for processes to seamlessly unite patients, doctors, staff, assets and information throughout the hospital.
The digitalization of the hospital helps us to:

• Manage the daily pharmacy activities from the entry of the pharmacy products in central pharmacy to satellites pharmacies located in different clinical departments.

Information delivery is crucial to health professionals and patients for the quality delivery of their care. The ICT Unit at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali-CHUK provides a range of ICT services to support and enable patient care.
We believe the demand for easy access to shared data, applications, flexible communication methods and a responsive support team are key to integrated patient care. By working in partnership with Hospital staff, patients, external health professionals, Ministry of Health and agencies ICT can better understand current and future needs, identify and implement the correct solutions in partnership with clinical staff.
Electronic medical records
Four applications are used in EMR: OpenClinic, Opemrs, PACS, LIS and eLMIS.
Openclinic:
Thanks to Openclinic, CHUK has greatly improved its service care delivery and annual income in general, for instance the way of operating in terms of receiving, recording care and diagnostics, discharging, follow-up and archiving and billing. It also manages patient data recording, pharmacy,Laboratory, radiology, e-archive as well as asset management.
OpenMRS:
Is an EMR used in HIV clinics to manage the HIV patients’ data. The HIV clinic staff from those particular clinics are able to report, trace, identify their improvement and status of their patients. The system make easier the reporting of data to the ministry of Health.
Hospital patient identification
Printed patient identity Card with unique hospital electronic ID number and bar codes replace hand written ID to ensure accurate patient identification.
Our staff record your electronic patient ID in the electronic medical record system called “OPENCLINIC” to easily link your medical record vital signs and observations with your medical record.
Only authorized CHUK healthcare staff can access your secure electronic medical record.
Your record is protected by strict legislation, as well as built-in security measures to protect against unauthorized access.
