Overview
Welcome to the Directorate of Nursing Service (DNS) at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali.
The Directorate of Nursing Services is one of the four directorates within clinical services division which has a big number of staff.
The Directorate of Nursing Services (DNS) consists of the Nursing Services Director, Hospital bed coordinator officer and Central sterile supply service (CSSS).
In addition, the Director of Nursing service operates together with Matrons of departments, nurse managers and night duty coordinators who are his/her subordinates.
Mission
To promote excellence in all aspects of nursing and midwifery services through the leading, support and coordination of such services in CHUK.
Working hours
Monday to Friday from: 7: 00 AM to 5:00 PM
Nursing Services
Our well-trained nursing staff is ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient nursing services.
We care for many different patients - those who have an acute illness, are recovering from surgery, had a recent heart attack, or are battling cancer.
1. Inpatient Nursing Services
Inpatient and Outpatient nursing and midwife staff provide medical-surgical, Gyn & Obs and pediatric nursing care to those who are in need of daily physician and registered nurse care. Our nurses are certified in Basic Life Support and pain management.
2. Palliative care
CHUK words work with palliative care agencies and social care service to provide care to terminally ill persons. Palliative Nursing staff work together with clinical psychologists to care for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient with a terminal diagnosis.
3. Wound Care
In all CHUK care wards, nurses are available to treat unhealed or recurring wounds as well as wounds related to diabetes and other illnesses.
4. Outpatient Nursing Services
A variety of Outpatient Nursing Services are available. These services include:
• Assisting physician during OPD nursing care
• Administration of blood products
• Administration of IV medications and antibiotics
• IV fluid administration for hydration
• Immunoglobin administration
• Administration of IM and Sub Q injections, including Lovenox
• Wound Care including dressing change
Education and Research
We provide in service training to our nursing staff from respective clinical department. A quarterly plan of certified trainings is provided and research on patient care satisfaction and improvement are conducted in different departments where patients are accessing care.
The nursing directorate include also in its education, the healthcare education and wellness of the patients and their caretakers. Different topics are discussed about such as “ Pain management, Hand Hygiene, Infection prevention and control, and so on..
