Kigali , Sunday 27th August 2017 - The University teaching hospital of Kigali (CHUK) in partnership with Rotary Districts in India will implement the 5th Rotary Medical Mission in Rwanda from 27th August to 06th September 2017. At the occasion surgeons will perform about 20 complicated neurosurgeries and 30 uro-surgeries in the 9 working days.

This medical mission is a special project of super specialities organised by The Past Rotary International President Raja Saboo and the 2016-2017 Rotary International President Ravi who participated to the last MEDICARE 4 after their meeting with the President of the Republic honoured by MOH officials last year.

In total 7-8 super specialities surgeons from India shall provide training - Theory & hands on training to Neurosurgery dept. and Urology dept during the medical mission. Also this medical mission is intended to send a Vocational Training Team of medical super specialties to Rwanda for training local surgeons, the finer techniques of Neurosurgeries &Urosurgeries. The visiting team will perform Neurosurgeries &urosurgeries on needy patients & giving a hands on training to the local surgeons. The VTT team will have 2 neurosurgeons & 3 urosurgeons.

Currently many of the operations such as Urethroplasty, Carcinoma prostate, Brain tumors, Cervical & lumbar spine surgeries are not performed regularly in Rwanda. The object of this project is thus to give hands on training to the local surgeons, so that these operations are performed more routinely, thus benefiting the patients. In the process, local anesthesiologists (8-10 in number) will also learn to handle anesthesia for these long and complicated procedures some surgeries may take 7-8 hrs. In addition, there will be patients of intra cranial tumors, prostatic tumors and tumors of kidney which will be operated, thus giving invaluable service to these patients and more so giving hands on training to the local specialists.

The project need was identified by doctors of CHUK hospital in Kigali and emphasized by Hon. Minister of Health . The local specialists have selected patients; They will line up cases for each day and complete all the preliminary investigations of the patients. Counselling of patients and their relatives will also be done by the local surgeons. The local super specialists will continue to operate after the team leaves.

Dist. 3132 of Rotary International in India has done similar surgical therapy & training in other countries but this is the first time, a super specialty team is going to Rwanda. Rotary districts in India have since the last 20 yrs, undertaken over 38 medical missions to 16 African countries. Through these multispecialty surgical therapy projects, over 70000 operations have been performed and over 150000 patients have been examined. These projects have not only been helpful to patients but to the medical fraternity in upgrading their knowledge and skills. Above all, the projects have helped in bonding of people of Africa and people of India.

Rwanda is the only country in Africa where a medical mission is being held fifth time. The entire credit of this goes to the unstinted support of Govt. of Rwanda, CHUK hospital authorities and dedicated Rotarians from Rotary Clubs in Kigali.
