Labor Pain Management At Chuk

Dr. Claudine Uzamukunda Junior Consultant Anesthesiologist

Labor pain has been described as the third worst pain ever experienced by a human being.

Severe untreated pain has negative physiological, psychological and social consequences.

In addition a multitude of pathological conditions mandate the suppression of labor pain for a healthy mother and new born. These include most of cardiac diseases on pregnancy, hypertensive diseases and others.

According to the American college of obstetrics and gynecology, “There is no other circumstance in which it is considered acceptable for an individual to experience severe pain, amenable to pain relief, while under a physician care.” Maternal request is a sufficient indication for labor analgesia

CHUK has been providing labor pain Relief since 2019. We tried to overcome challenges to this service which included scarcity of anesthesiologist mainly.

Currently CHUK has a strong and safe labor analgesia unit, where we provide all forms of labor pain management, most importantly a provision of safe “EPIDURAL ANALGESIA”. We encourage every pregnant woman or those who are planning to be pregnant not to suffer from that severe treatable labor pain.

Endoscopic Surgery in Gynecology (Minimally invasive surgery)

The range of surgical procedures in gynecology, performed with the use of either laparoscope or a hysteroscopy is designated as endoscopic surgery. First description of endoscopy is recorded by Phillip Bozzini in 1805.
In 1967 Steptoe of England first published the monograph “Laparoscopy in Gynecology” in English language. Kurt Semm of Germany is credited for his advanced operative laparoscopic procedures (myomectomy) in the 1970s. First laparoscopic hysterectomy was reported by Reich et. al in 1989.

Advantages of laparoscopic surgery

  • Rapid postoperative recovery.
  • Less postoperative pain and reduced need of postoperative analgesia.
  • Shorter hospital stay and reduced concomitant cost
  • Quicker resumption of day-to-day activity
  • Less adhesion formation
  • Minimal abdominal scars (cosmetic value)
  • Reduced blood loss
