Otorhinolaryngology Unit (ENT)
Overview
The specialty of Otolaryngology is one of unit of the department of surgery at CHUK.It is a diverse clinical discipline that deals with disorders involving the Head & Neck region, primarily diseases afflicting the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT). In the past few years, the specialty has grown in scope and depth, mainly fueled by the start of residency program of Ear ,Nose and Throat in 2010 at University of Rwanda and the expansion of knowledge and material resources as a result of partnership with German ENT association and Boston Children’s hospital . The ENT surgeon is therefore a doctor who specializes in evaluating and treating patients with ear, nose (including sinuses) and throat (including voice and speech) disorders. In addition, they also manage patients with head and neck cancers as well as surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

Head & Neck Surgery
Surgical treatment of head and neck tumors. These include surgery for benign and malignant diseases of salivary glands, thyroid and parathyroid glands, tumors of the oral cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx and larynx (throat) and neck lymph nodes. We adopt a multidisciplinary approach, collaborating closely with other related specialties to provide comprehensive patient care for the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers.

Otology (Ear)
Treatment and surgery for acute and chronic ear infections (cholesteatoma, mastoiditis, suppurative otitis media) and evaluation for hearing loss and vertigo.

Rhinology and Paranasal Sinuses (Nose)

Diagnosis and surgery for nose and sinus tumors, chronic sinusitis, septoplasty . Advanced techniques of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and trans palatal approach to the nasopharynx. We also provide clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients with allergic rhinitis .

Laryngology and Speech

Evaluation and treatment of voice and speech disorders, including video laryngoscopy. Surgical treatment of the larynx for different disorders are also available. Some Endoscopic and open laryngotracheal surgeries are also performed.

Paediatric Otolaryngology (Children)
Evaluation and surgical treatment of childhood ailments such as chronic or recurrent tonsillitis, otitis media with effusion and paediatric airway problems. Congenital abnormality such as lymphangiomas ,cyst and choanal atresia disorders are also addressed. Tonsillectomy, insertion of ear ventilation tubes, microlaryngo-bronchoscopy (MLB) for evaluation and treatment of airway problems including forein bodies removal are routinely performed.

Audiology (Hearing and Vertigo)
The audiological services provide essential support to doctors in the evaluation and management of patients with hearing loss, vertigo and balancing problems (due to vestibular dysfunction). They provide comprehensive audiological evaluation and cliniocal vestibular function tests such as dix halpike manoevers . Therapeutic intervention in the form of canalith repositioning manoeuvre and are also available.

Acute Trauma surgery
As CHUK is national level 1 trauma center we provide trauma care of different traumatic injuries ranging from simple soft tissues laceration to complex maxillofacial bone fractures in collaboration with our colleagues of oral and maxillofacial unit. We also provide care to non penetrating and penetrating neck trauma including acute airway management.
Organization of the unit

The unit is divided into 3main parts:

Out Patient Department (OPD).
The clinic run from Monday to Friday form 8:00 am to 5:pm for non admitted patients.I comprises 3 clinic offices with comfortable treatment units, diagnostic facilities such as examination microscope,flexible endoscopy and video otolaryngoscopy with monitor.It is also equipped with audiology cabine with Pure Tone Audiometer and typmanometer .There is one treament room for nursing care and minor procedures under local anesthesia.

Admission ward
The main admission ward for ENT is in Pavillon ophthalmology.Some of our patients prefers to be admitted in pavillon Izere and pavillon clinic. We make also regular follow-up admitted patients with ENT problems on other comorbidities around hospital. There is a 24hours call for emergencies and admitted patients for 7days.Aut
Operating Theater
The major ENT surgeries either emergencies or electives are performed in main theater. We have 4rooms per week (Monday ,Wednesday and Friday)
